Globe-Hopping by Darin Lowery Let me explain something: I am not a traveler, and as a tourist I’m a washout. Other folks want to board a tour bus and toast the Pacific or the Pyramids with regional varietals at midnight. Give me a few pots of coffee and a chance to ditch my companions and I’ll go junking, digging my way through boxes of old marbles, postcards and 1960’s publicity stills. Keep the sunsets and give me the Salvation Army thrift store. But hey-... Read More

Frank Balaam’s new work, Light through the Trees, is testimony to the resilience of both nature and artist. In the face of two devastating fires within years of each other; one, which took out the Pioneer Hotel in Globe which housed the Balaam Gallery and the other, which took out vast acreages of northern forest in the Rodeo-Chedeski area, both artist and trees are beginning to send up magnificent shoots of new growth. Dale & Claire Gilbert of the San Carlos Apache Tribe His earliest memories of beading trace back to his grandmother. She would spread a blanket on the ground and tell stories in Apache to her grandchildren while she beaded. Dale remembers the stories, although he spoke little Apache as a child, and even less now as a grown man. But it was her presence he remembers. “She sold little miniature items to the Peridot Trading Post, where she would trade her work for... Read More

Resolution Copper Project Open for Debate, Tours A lone hawk circles above my head as I stand looking out over the land about three miles east of Superior. It’s so quiet here. The first thought I have is, “wow, I’m standing just where the Prince of England stood when he visited here!” The second thought is more sobering. How in the world could anyone think of mining here in this beautiful place? But that’s exactly what Resolution Copper Mining... Read More

A Keystone Remembrance At a time when there were few jobs in town, especially for a 15 year old boy, Ryan-Evans Drug Store was hiring a stock boy that year. I had been told in no uncertain terms by my parents that they would not provide me with money, nor would they allow my grandmother to do so, and so I jumped at the opportunity to apply. Much to my surprise, I was selected for the job which paid 50 cents an hour and thus began my working career. I worked every night after... Read More

What’s Really Important in the World Part II Yes, the economy has tanked, and yes, I know you miss your Manolos. But what a great opportunity there is to count our blessings, no matter how simple yet sublime… In the last issue, I listed things in Life which make me smile- old telephones, vintage films, and wacky table lamps. However, a life filled with stuff can get a bit lonely- and in my case, a little crowded. Some of the joys in this journey we call LIFE are... Read More
