Welcome to Besh Ba Gowah
The Besh-Ba-Gowah archeological park located on the outskirts of Globe, Az is one of top ten attractions in the area. The 700 year old ruins of the Salado Indian village is beautifully preserved and visitors can walk the grounds and climb ladders into second story rooms to view the typical furnishings of the era.
The Museum/Gift Shop has numerous displays of pottery and other artifacts of this long ago era and the conference room offers visitors a chance to sit and view a video which depicts the regions history and the development of the Salado culture.
Besh-Ba Gowah sits at the confluence of two creeks and represents one of the largest single site archaelogical collection in the southwest according to JQ Jacobs.
It is used by the community for private events (the conference room and grounds may be rented for events), and it hosts several public events during the year including;
Noche de Luminaries in December where 1600 luminaries are lit and line the walls of this ancient ruin. The event draws photographers and visitors every year to experience the magic and enjoy the evening's program which includes Native American artisans and Christmas carolers. Paul Wolterbeck with Boyce Thompson Arboretum has posted many of the images from area photographers which can be seen here.
The site was first excavated in the 20's by Irene Vickery who uncovered nearly 200 rooms and 350 burial sites. When she died in the '40's the side was left unattended and was in danger of being paved over for a city parking lot when a local councilman, Luis Aguirre, stepped forward to save the site.
