TIPS FROM YOUR HOMETOWN VET
by: Dr. Ted Pittman

By 3 years of age, 80% of dogs and 79% of cats have oral disease.  Please continue reading for a money saving offer to help you improve your pets overall health.

How do you know if your pet is showing signs of Dental Disease?  Does your pet have one or more of the following symptoms?

  • Drooling
  • Shying away when you try to touch their head or face
  • Bad breath
  • Pawing at the face
  • Bleeding gums
  • Decrease in appetite or weight loss

If you answered yes to any of the above, you should schedule a Dental exam with your Veterinarian.  A free Dental exam and estimate for care are available at Noah’s Ark Mobile Clinic.

What if you don’t do anything?  Untreated Dental disease is one of the leading causes of heart, liver and kidney disease in pets.  Also, Dental disease is progressive.  Your pet will loose teeth, may become anti-social, or aggressive, and will have a shorter life with you.

You can fix this problem!  Make an appointment with your Veterinarian, for a Dental exam and an explanation of needed treatment.  A good Dental cleaning will require the use of a general anesthetic, to facilitate removal of tarter/plaque from both above and below the gum line, as well as tooth polishing to help slow down new build-up.  This also enables your Veterinarian to completely examine not only your pet’s teeth but the gums, cheeks and upper throat.

You can prevent this condition in your pet by getting a Dental cleaning from time to time, but daily brushing of your pet’s teeth, the use of special rinses, and Dental chews, may increase the time between Dental cleanings.  There are also special foods and treats on the market to help prevent plaque and tarter build-up.  Ask us what is appropriate for your pet.
